Martha Samuel, right, of Springdale performs the song “Totor Iumin Mejatoto,” meaning “living excitingly in the atmosphere today,” along with members of the First Marshallese Full Gospel Church Choir during a kickoff event for NorthWest Arkansas Community College’s themed semester on The Marshall Islands in Bentonville. Jessica A. Schwartz of Columbia University presented a lecture entitled “Radiation Sounds: Marshallese Music and Nuclear Silences” at the event. The next event in the themed semester will be Bikini Atoll Commemoration Day on Feb. 28 at the college.

Nehemiah Looper, a worker with the Washington County Road Department, operates a track hoe Monday to demolish the bridge that spanned the West Fork of the White River and connected Harvey Dowell and Mally Wagnon roads. The 87-year-old bridge is being replaced with a two-lane bridge at a cost of $400,000 to $500,000. The project is expected to be completed by December.
